Green Technology and Environment

This is a blog of my green tech & environmnet news articles that I find interesting and I curate them to stay on topic with about 1 to 3 posts per day. Anyone is free to commentand discuss the posts as long as it stays on the topic of the post.

It is being run as a Collection which means only I am posting but anyone is free to comment and discuss the posts as long as it stays on the topic of the post.

Out of long experience this has shown me to be the most focussed way of obtaining relevant interesting news without lots of spam and off topic chatter. I have no intention of spending time moderating a social Community. I've previously had over 500,000 followers on G+ and they followed because posts stayed strictly on topic. I hope people will appreciate that here and if you'd rather do social chat there will be other Groups for that. I honestly can't find time to do news as well as moderate lots of other posts that I have not researched myself.

Eskom (SA's sole power utility) wants more electric vehicles on South Africa’s roads

Despite being unable to guarantee a stable and consistent supply of electricity, Eskom says it remains committed to its role in unlocking the potential of the electric vehicle (EV) market in South Africa.

The power utility released a statement last week saying that it is working with major players in this regard and that the hurdles slowing the roll-out of EVs in South Africa are actually:

    * Price — EVs attra...  more

Elonroad EV Charging System To Get First Trial In Sweden - Smaller batteries needed means cheaper EVs

No its apparently not named after Elon Musk and these are rails, not inductors, fitted on top of the existing road. So in themselves, they would be cheaper to fit and give more mobility to charging vs standing still and being plugged in. At first, I was pretty sceptical about the viability of this but we already fit and wire up electrical light poles all along roads... if this was supplementary...  more

Are these the clueless humans expressing opinions all over social media about climate change - Please tell me the fate of Earth is not in their hands! (Video)

The U.N. released a big report this week that says among other things, that more than a million species of plants and animals are facing extinction. This is something Jimmy Kimmel Live needed to act on, so to raise awareness, they went out on the street to ask people if they were worried about one endangered species in particular - 'Homo ...  more

This is something we need to act on, so to raise awareness, we went out on the street to ask people if they were worried about one endangered species in particular - 'Homo Sapiens.' Homo Sapiens, of course, are humans. So we asked humans if they...

Who can convince those who reject climate science? Maybe their kids - US Experiment showed middle-schoolers got their parents thinking

There are significant generational differences when it comes to opinions on climate change in the US. Students are more open to learning about this scientific issue without getting snagged on the culture wars that have divided American opinions along political and cultural lines, which probably explains why younger people are less likely than their grandparents ...  more

New York's Columbia University Scientists discover a game-changing way to remove salt from water called Temperature Swing Solvent Extraction

The process is called Temperature Swing Solvent Extraction and it's designed to purify hypersaline brines (water that contains a high concentration of salts, making it up to seven times as salty as seawater). This kind of wastewater is produced by industrial processes and during oil and gas production, and it poses a major pollution risk to groundwater.

UK power plants just went five days without burning any coal - Wind picks up as coal declines

UK power plants have just gone over five days without burning any coal, their longest coal-free streak since the Industrial Revolution, Bloomberg reports. The five-day period, which began on May 1st, beats the 90-hour record that was set earlier this year. The UK intends to phase out coal power completely by 2025.

This new record comes just over two years after the UK achieved the milestone of going o...  more

UK Declares “Climate Emergency” As Committee On Climate Change Urges Net-Zero

The UK Parliament has taken the unprecedented step of declaring an “environment and climate emergency” this week at the same time as it was urged by the country’s Committee on Climate Change to adopt a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target for 2050 “as soon as possible.”

This came at the same time as Scotland — one of four countries which make up the United Kingdom — made its own decision to commit to a net-zero g...  more

Tourism can boost GDP and is often not at all eco-friendly but Cape Town's Hotel Verde bucks that trend by being carbon-neutral

Five years ago its visionary owner, Italian-born Mario Delicio had the 145 room building constructed with double glazing, an array of solar panels, super-efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and a grey-water system that saves thousands of litres of water daily. The investment was high, but the groundwork was laid, and the green dividends are lasti...  more

RAC launches EV flat-battery recovery scheme - UK-developed device can recharge 99% of electric vehicles stranded at the roadside

The RAC has launched a new emergency charger for drivers of electric vehicles stranded at the roadside. Called EV Boost, the EV recovery device has been installed on six of the breakdown service’s Ford Transit Custom patrol vans ahead of a large-scale roll-out over the coming years.

As with the RAC’s Fuel Assist service, customers with an EV that’s run out of char...  more

Living With A Renault Twizy Electric Vehicle In Central London - The Future Of Inner City Commuting?

A candid review of making use of this tiny two-seater in a very busy city with expensive congestion charges. Yes, it is a not going to travel at high speeds over long distances but with a 3 or 4 hour charge time and enough range to navigate through busy small side streets and be weatherproof it probably fits the bill (the bill being a tenth or less of the cost of a larger luxury EV). Imagine a c...  more

New research shows pollution from cars is responsible for 4 million new cases of childhood asthma each year

Asthma has many causes, including genetics and allergies. But chief among them is air pollution, especially from traffic. In fact, car exhaust  —  specifically particles of nitrogen dioxide or NO2  —  is responsible for an estimated 4 million new cases of childhood asthma worldwide each year, according to new research published in The Lancet Planetary Health. Looked at another way, car ex...  more

Absolute Beast Of A Wooden Wind Turbine Blade Rolls Off The Assembly Line - A 107m Blade for a 12 MW Wind Turbine

Last year GE unleashed a coal-killing monster wind turbine, billed as the largest and most efficient in the world. The only thing missing was the turbine blades. Big ones. Like, bigger than any other turbine blades. Well, miss no more. The new ultra-long turbine blades are taking form at a factory in France, and the first one is almost ready for its closeup.

LM’s wind turbines are ...  more
