Green Technology and Environment

This is a blog of my green tech & environmnet news articles that I find interesting and I curate them to stay on topic with about 1 to 3 posts per day. Anyone is free to commentand discuss the posts as long as it stays on the topic of the post.
It is being run as a Collection which means only I am posting but anyone is free to comment and discuss the posts as long as it stays on the topic of the post.
Out of long experience this has shown me to be the most focussed way of obtaining relevant interesting news without lots of spam and off topic chatter. I have no intention of spending time moderating a social Community. I've previously had over 500,000 followers on G+ and they followed because posts stayed strictly on topic. I hope people will appreciate that here and if you'd rather do social chat there will be other Groups for that. I honestly can't find time to do news as well as moderate lots of other posts that I have not researched myself.

Another Electric Vehicle Benefit: No Direct Exposure To Cancer-Causing Benzene - especially for workers at gas stations

The World Health Organization, an international public health agency associated with the United Nations, has written this statement about the chemical: “Benzene is a well-established cause of cancer in humans.1,3 The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified benzene as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).1,3 Benzene causes acute myeloid leukaemia (acute non-lymph...  more

California replacing 200 polluting diesel school buses with all-electric buses - study published in Economics of Education Review last month showed diesel retrofits had positive results on both respiratory health and test scores

A study published in Economics of Education Review last month showed diesel retrofits had positive results on both respiratory health and test scores. Eliminating emissions from these buses completely will do even more to protect children from dangerous emissions while ...  more

My solar installation generated half of my daily consumption yesterday (10.91kWh) and peaked at 2116W

It's only been in two or three days now but is averaging 10kWh generation per day (we are still in Winter but days are short and sunny). Batteries were fully recharged by 2pm. I need to play a bit with the battery state of charge limits and am running them down to 60% for now. The geyser is not running off solar but everything else is until the battery state of charge falls to 60% during the ni...  more

This Is Exactly Why Clean Coal Is A Joke - It's the tons of toxic coal ash that must be disposed of somewhere

The US utility Ameren Missouri should be walking on sunshine right now. The company has just announced its second rate cut this year, thanks in part to its new “Smart Energy” plan which is loaded with clean tech goodies. Instead, Ameren Missouri is facing the wrath of environmental groups and local residents over its plan for dealing with tons of ash left over from its coal power plants...  more

I just installed solar panels because now’s the time in the US as price reductions lose momentum and subsidies reduce from 2020

OK I don't live in the US but I am busy with my second solar installation here in South Africa. The downside in South Africa is zero government subsidy towards solar installations but the cost benefits still work out for me over 5 years or so in savings on electricity and no impact from grid outages due to periodic load shedding.

The lesson for me was starting too sma...  more

Tesla Supercharger Network Evolution — From 6 To 13,344 Superchargers In 6 Years in US but have other countries got ready yet?

The Tesla Supercharger network is still one of the top reasons electric car buyers are convinced to buy a Tesla rather than another company’s electric car. The network was a critical competitive advantage identified years ago when surveying EV drivers and potential EV drivers, and it seems to be referenced every day in comments on CleanTechnica as a core competitive adv...  more

The electric vehicle — great opportunities and serious threats for South Africa

Many of the obvious benefits are stated as well as the well known "negative" ones like the loss of the fuel levy but the article also expands on the jobs under threat in not only the transport value chain but also for South Africa the declining demand for catalytic converters and our platinum mining business. I don't agree about the manufacturing side as there is no reason why SA can't transition its existing manufa...  more

My new 335W solar panels being installed - Canadian Solar CS6U-335P 335W Solar Panels

Unfortunately Although these panels push out nearly 3x the wattage of my older panels these are much bigger (touching on 2m) so the installation had to spill over to another roof, needing new mounting rails and as the voltage is now also double I've had to replace both my solar charge controller as well as inverter (all 48V now).

These Poly-Crystalline panels have a high system energy yield at low irradiance ...  more

Tree planting 'has mind-blowing potential' to tackle the climate crisis

Planting billions of trees across the world is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists, who have made the first calculation of how many more trees could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.

As trees grow, they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating. New research estimates that a worldwide planting programme could...  more

France's Airbus Moves In With Daher & Safran To Build Hybrid Aircraft By 2022

Airbus is letting no time go by (while Boeing deals with self-inflicted problems) by announcing more electric air mobility news, that of a hybrid aircraft with the French turbine company Safran and airplane maker Daher. And to prove the point that urban air mobility (UAM) is doing very well, Airbus aims to have the airplane ready by 2022.

How the 3 companies interact to create the hybrid aircraft is as follows: Airbu...  more
